Synopsis

Antarctica fools you into thinking you are safe, that appearances are reality. Antarctica is not what she seems. Since he was thirteen years old, author John Barell's life-long-and life-enriching-dream has been to sail to Antarctica and explore its wild and expansive territories. Quest for Antarctica: A Journey of Wonder and Discovery recounts Barell's Antarctic adventure that is not only captivating but also educational. Fostered by knowing America's foremost polar explorer, Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, and with strong family support, Barell's dream continues south to McMurdo Sound and to the two-mile thick polar plateau. Follow Barell's expeditions, including becoming a teacher, and learn how all of the survival lessons of Antarctica apply to striving for our own goals and being successful.

About the Author

John F. Barell became fascinated with Antarctic exploration at the age of thirteen and sailed there with the U.S. Navy after college. For years afterward as an educator in public schools, at university levels and as a national consultant, Antarctica has served as his model for being inquisitive, forming communities of trust, and making our way in life. Visit: http://antarcticdreams.com www.morecuriousminds.com John Barell is a national consultant to schools interested in teaching inquiry, problem solving, critical thought and reflection. A native New Yorker, Barell has sailed to Antarctica as part of Operation Deepfreeze to explore that continent based upon his meetings and correspondences with Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. After Antarctica, he became an educator in New York City public high schools, then at Montclair State University in teacher education and world literature (now Professor Emeritus). Subsequently, he was a consultant at The American Museum of Natural History where he fostered networks of inquiry among science and social studies educators. Currently, he is researching the various ways we assess the quality and improvement of students' performances with 21st century skills. For this project he is under contract with Corwin Press, the publisher of two previous books (Yellow Bus and Problem-Based Learning) and is working with educators in IB, P21, STEM, High Tech and Expeditionary Learning and other schools around the country and in Canada. Sailing to Antarctica has served as his model for inquiry: starting with a dream and a passion leads to explorations of new territories, both physical, spiritual, educational and creative. Barell is author of these publications about Antarctica: Quest for Antarctica-A Journey of Wonder and Discovery (memoir, 2007); Surviving Erebus-An Antarctic Adventure on board HMS
