In the end, they not only learn about what foods their dad should eat to keep his heart working well, they also get a firsthand lesson on the functions of the circulatory system. A Heart Pumping Adventure is one of five stories featured in the Human Body Detectives series, along with Battle with the Bugs, Osteoblasts to the Rescue, The Lucky Escape, and Brainiacs, debuting in June 2014.

Do your books have a teaching objective?  If so, what is it?

Yes! But what is so wonderful about the series is that kids do not even realize they are learning. My goals for students are:
 
●      Have a basic understanding on how each body system functions, how they work independently, yet are dependent on each other to function optimally.
●      Understand the important role nutrition plays in having a healthy body.


Do you plan on doing a series for older kids?

I recently launched the Human Body Detectives Go To School Nutrition 101 for Middle and High School curriculum. It is an extensive turnkey nutrition unit for grades 6 through 12. It is full of entertaining labs, practical information and simple everyday guidelines to food and nutrition.

Kids have an innate curiosity about how their bodies work. The human body is indeed a
fascinating subject, and after all, nothing is closer to us than our own selves. Surprisingly, many of us, parents and kids included, don't understand much about how our bodies work. Naturopathic doctor Heather Manley experienced firsthand students' bright-eyed excitement for learning about the human body when she volunteered to share her medical knowledge with her young kids' schoolmates.
