Richard Wagner's operas are merely stories--that is, until two children bring them to life. Mary and Danny, two nine-year-olds, have almost nothing in common: Mary lives in an apartment with her cold mother and silent sister, while Danny has attentive parents and a house the size of a castle. Mary and Danny, though, share two things: a love of Richard Wagner and a deep loneliness. Little do they know where Wagner's music will take them. One day, Mary and Danny are called by Wotan, the gods' king, into Wagner's Ring, a world of dwarves, Valkyries, water spirits, and angry tribes. They must return a magical piece of gold to the river it has been stolen from. The children's enemies, though, are always one step behind them. If Mary can't conquer her fears and if Danny can't swallow his insolent pride, doom could be spelled for not only them, but also for the world.
