John Brown and the Last Train is the story of John Brown and his last raid on Missouri slave farms and the subsequent trip north to Canada. Along the way, a baby was born to a Freedom Seeker. They fought in the Battle of the Spurs. They received help from the major UGR Stations in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. Famous detective, Allan Pinkerton helped them get across to Canada. This is historical fiction based on factual events and told through the voices of the Freedom Seekers.

I produced a documentary film, Freedom Seekers: Stories From the Western Underground Railroad. My research found this little known coming of age story and I was compelled to share it with young people. The story of these Freedom Seekers illustrates the resilience and desire for freedom demonstrated by persons held in bondage in antebellum Missouri. The story reveals a compassionate and human side to the mythical John Brown.
Gary Jenkins descended from Missouri farmers. Some of which probably owned slaves or benefited from the agriculture slave economy. As an adult, he decided to take a close look at this shameful American history. Out of that personal search, Mr. Jenkins produced two feature length documentary films; Negroes To Hire: Slave Life and Culture on Antebellum Missouri Farms and Freedom Seekers: Stories From the Western Underground Railroad.
