The purpose of the book is to provide a path for people to acquire a basic acquaintance with opera, leading in time to greater understanding, deeper enjoyment and eventually a love of the most passionate of the arts; and to make the reader an avid subscriber, donor and volunteer with her/his local opera company. With chapters on how to start pleasurably and affordably, on suggested repertory, on the most enjoyable ways to prepare for a performance, and even some suggestions on operas to postpone for now, the book is aimed primarily at the young, but also at that huge swathe of the population entering its golden years who are attracted by the traditions, the vocal splendor and visual spectacle of great opera.
