Opening the Royal Academy’s 2004 Summer Exhibition the art critic Robert Hughes declared ‘I don’t think there is any doubt that the present commercialisation of the art world at the top end is a cultural obscenity.’ Has art really become just one more dish at the banquet of corporate greed and if so can its reputation as a mean of transcending everyday experience be revived? In his first week at art school the ingenuous Brian Jones meets flambouyant Chloe and Essex twins Issa and Bella, Hector Lugg, a former dosser researching his Ph.D and Samson, a half Aborigine mystic. Together they form The FauxNaif dedicated to restoring the ‘aesthetic’ to art. However, in an artistic and cultural environment where superficial form dominates significant content, cost determines value and novelty usurps innovation, their will be no easy task. Can The FauxNaif rescue art from the clutches of capitalism or will their idealism be sacrificed to society's addiction to mass media spectacle? The Ivory Basement offers an acerbic view of Postmodern life and art.
