With an increase in admission to intensive care units, medical professionals must search for the best practices and procedures to provide efficient medical care to each patient. Despite medical advances, there is still a need for well-trained cardiovascular intensivists to meet the needs of patients.
Modern Concepts and Practices in Cardiothoracic Critical Care brings together the most recent research and current issues facing medical professionals and patients in intensive cardiovascular care to provide the necessary tools and resources for improved health and medical care. Including chapters on safety, ethics, and specific surgical techniques, this book is an essential reference source for medical students, residents, fellows, anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, nurses, physician assistants and pharmacists who all care for patients following cardiothoracic surgery.
This collection serves as a reference on topics such as patient care, preoperative assessments, pharmacology, surgical technologies and techniques, postoperative patient monitoring, and best practices in cardiothoracic critical care.

Adam S. Evans is currently an assistant professor on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where he actively practices cardiac anesthesia and is an intensivist in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit. He completed his anesthesiology residency at Weill Cornell Medical College in 2010 followed by a fellowship in critical care at Columbia Presbyterian and a fellowship in cardiac anesthesia at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College as part of the joint five year MD-MBA program with Widener University in Delaware. Dr. Evans is an active member of the Society for Critical Care Medicine, Society for Cardiac Anesthesia, and New York State Society of Anesthesiologists. He has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on issues pertinent to the management of critically ill patients in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit.

The creation of the Housestaff Quality Council was a result of some of this work.
Insung Chung grew up in southern California but left for the East Coast to attend Brown University where he graduated with a BA in Economics. He worked in the Chodobski lab doing traumatic brain injury research on mice looking at the expression of VEGF and V1 receptors in the choroid plexus and synaptic proteins. After Providence, he moved to Philadelphia where he attended Drexel University College of Medicine and then trained in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He then completed fellowships in Critical Care Medicine and Adult CardioThoracic Anesthesia at New York Presbyterian Columbia University.
The intellectual quality of this book is excellent. It includes a thorough and thoughtful discussion of each topic in a way that is both instructive and practical. Providers and trainees will benefit greatly from using this resource and, more importantly, their patients will benefit. --Michael Bates, MD, Ochsner Medical Center, Doodys Review Service
