Is reality real? What does enlightenment have to do with a sweater? Who is Natalia? Is the sparkle machine definable or purely experiential? Why is Dallas better than Houston? Is alcohol good, evil, neither, both? In this highly-acclaimed debut, Hunter Vaughan provides provocative, entertaining and insightful meanderings about the fascinating and magical journey of life. From fast-food in Houston to the lecture halls of Berkeley, from high-speed euphoria to the dark depths of depression, and from delicate prose to raunchy sexism, Observations of the Coral Reef explores what it means to be right there, in ring-side seats, for the whole spectacular show.

Review:
Vaughan's feuilletons, many no more than a page or two, last only long enough to illustrate a brief encounter, a nameless character or a predicament before flitting past like bright autumn leaves. However, the emotions these writings evoke--anxiety, ruefulness, jaded ennui, spiritual exaltation--will remain with readers far longer.  Kirkus Reviews

At times, Observations of the Coral Reef depicts intellectual edginess at its finest, but at others it is filled with heartfelt and soulful confessions. The book is a healthy mixture of pure wit, humor and sobering life lessons philosophical enough to likely strike a raw nerve in each of us. Milwaukee Mag.com

Observations of the Coral Reef, is worth a closer look.  Author Hunter Vaughan's wide-ranging collection of essays, is written with an unpretentiously elegant style and often with humor.  Shepherd Express

Observations frequently fluctuates from profound beauty to offensive banality and back again, just like life itself. As disparate as they are, the individual pieces occasionally aspire to brilliance--San Francisco Book Review

The curve balls of life challenge us to piece it all together. "Observations of the Coral Reef" is a collection of short fiction and memoir from Hunter Vaughan as he ponders many aspects of life in many avenues and what it all means to him. "Observations of the Coral Reef" is a humorous and unique twist of life and all of its woes, very much recommended--Midwest Book Review
