This collection of Stapler Farm recipes comes from the days when icings were cooked from a boiled syrup, candy was homemade, fresh apples were chopped or grated by hand for cakes, nuts from native trees were shelled by hand, jellies were made from fruit from our trees and food was shared with neighbors and family who frequented Stapler Farm. These recipes reveal an era of cooking traditions that changed with the seasons, the generations and the years. Enjoy the foods of our past and present—the old recipes for scratch baking and boiled icings, the progression through the years of cake mix variations and congealed jello salads, and the recipes of our contemporary cooking. Also included are photos of what awaited visitors to Stapler Farm.

Margaret Henderson, who inherited Stapler Farm, began cooking and baking at an early age at her mother's side, stirring, cutting out cookies, peeking in the oven to check for doneness and enjoying the company of her family and friends as good food was prepared and eaten. Founder of Heart Bakery, an enterprise providing baking mixes to commercial kitchens in the 1980s, she developed a line of reduced cholesterol products.
