In "Bared Fangs", the first short novel in this Western trio, Ben Flinder's life is complicated by the arrival of a young woman who is in flight. She is befriended by a wolf, Gray Shadow, but not even he is able to prevent her capture.
"Gallows Gamble" finds Jack Sherry and his partner, Bill Garvin, herding 'wet' cattle across the border in the hope of recovering from debt and starting over. Framed by means of stolen money, Sherry is incapacitated by a bullet in the back, while Garvin is sentenced to hang.
"The Wolf Strain" continues the adventures of Bull Hunter with his partner, gunfighter Pete Reeve, the wolf dog known as The Ghost, and the black stallion, Diablo. Hunter's effort to return a locket to Mary Hood finds The Ghost estranged to Hunter and Pete Reeve now a sworn foe.

From Booklist:
One of the pulp era's most popular and prolific authors, Brand has recently received new respect from critics, particularly for his western short fiction. These three short novels reflect Brand's ability to integrate the natural world into his stories. In "Bared Fangs," an innocent man returns after 10 years in prison to the town where he was convicted and battles the gang that framed him. "Gallows Gamble" also turns on innocent folks framed for a crime. This time, two cowpunchers who hope to make one last drive from Mexico before settling down are sucked into a vortex of violence and death. The title piece features Bull Hunter, one of Brand's most popular characters. Bull, his partner Pete Reeve, horse Diablo, and dog Ghost try to return a lost locket to one Mary Hood and wind up in all sorts of trouble. The plots may sound simplistic, but Brand's execution is surprisingly sophisticated. These stories, previously unavailable in book form, make an excellent addition to any western collection.
