'The Secret Garden' is the timeless story of Mary Lennox, a sickly girl who is left orphaned and alone when an outbreak of cholera kills her parents and the staff of their home in India. She eventually ends up in Yorkshire with her uncle Archibald Craven, and becomes inspired by the curious story of a nearby 'secret garden' she hears from a neighbour.
Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel 'The Secret Garden was first published as a serial beginning in 1910, it numbers amongst Burnett's most famous works and is widely considered to be a classic of English children's literature. This edition was originally published in 1912 and is accompanied by Charles Robinson's beautiful illustrations.
Charles Robinson (1870-1937) was an active painter in his own right, and brother of the famous Thomas and William Heath Robinson, his illustrations still delight both young and old over a century later. Robinson started his illustrative career with 100 pen and ink drawings for ‘A Child’s Garden of Verses’ (1895). The book was an instant hit, and from that point onward, Robinson continued to illustrate fairy tales and children’s books – with his characteristic style of subtle line, combined with delicate watercolours.
Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was a seminal American-English playwright and novelist whose notable works include 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' (1885), 'A Little Princess' (1905), and 'The Secret Garden' (1911).
Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.
