Henry Childs Merwin (1853-1929) was a Boston lawyer, a biographer of Jefferson and Burr, and a regular contributor to The Atlantic, where Dogs and Men first appeared in 1910. It is not a manual and has nothing to say about breeding or breed points. It is a reflection on character, loyalty and moral obligation, built around five dogs Merwin knew: Pedro, Carus, Don, Sylvan Roamer and Toby.
Written at the height of the American genteel essay, it is the kind of small book that people press on one another, and it has been quietly loved for over a century.
