My favorite real job is saying something. It could be the bullshitting at lunch hour or the bizarre affinity between hard times and pure joy. My favorite real job says a lot about me and some of these moving peoples that give you half their sandwich, not as a favor but as life. This is art if you want to be there, falling asleep on the job until someone recognizes in your half closed eyes that you’re dreaming of love, this is a big part of art for me, something waiting in the kitchen for the song of two hours sleep. Waiting for the kind hand of craziness that takes you out painting afterwards. Hands that look like mortality, eyes that look at the continual renewal that accompanies a spirit untamed but central, like the free idea of art you can count on 4 in the morning to be wide open. Open to the many things that stand for the same thing, be it music, video, painting, singing. A bunch of unnamed, unarmed, understandably tired and scared but real things, things you can create with your own hands and imagination. It don’t matter what time or what price you gotta be there, “you got to sing to let life move!” - said my friend from Africa. He said it to see me smile, not to be right or important, but to be there for someone coming up the hill tired and unexplainably different. To be involved and curious are human rights often explained as errors, It seems so damn fun to run around and see people freak out and live, people constantly mistaking themselves as you. constantly understanding the world through touch and feel. This could be a resource, an animal thing or some hard luck, I don’t know, you’re just born in it so you could leave it alone and get a real job so to speak, or you could use every material you have to explain how tender the muscles of the beast and how graceful and fulfilling their little songs go on working.This is art for me, my favorite job.
