Synopsis

“Bronson uses his hands with manly pride. There is precision in his movements. He is deliberate, slow and meticulous. We chat as he asks for the tools, smiling as I hand them to him as if he were a surgeon. Then, task finished, he stands back to survey his handiwork. Bronson has started a training course. He has a job. He’s a working class man. Now he moves in the world of men and machines, strangers and family alike, with satisfaction and humour - living beyond a minimal life. Given ‘wings to fly’.” Brooks continues the journey with her son, Bronson, with life after ‘I’m not broken, I’m just different’. Some untold earlier stories are included. The book contains chapters by Prof. Tony Attwood, Dr John Miller and Dr Steele Fitchett on the future of Asperger's, which bring hope. The focus of this sequel is to give a clearer view of the struggle adults with Asperger’s and their families face daily, in a narrative that is real, engaging and accessible. There is a view into the fearless flight of her son into manhood, past interviews with friends and specialists, which give an intimate window into their lives and also a selection of posters. Statistics and research can only offer so much. Brooks brings the untold story. Brooks brings warmth, passion and wit to life once more—we gain insight and ultimately awareness of this misunderstood syndrome and discover the wonderful mantra that ‘it’s never too late’. The beauty of this edition is it’s triumph.

About the Author

Linda was born and raised in a small country town on the east coast of Australia, near Lake Macquarie. Her friends tell her she should be a stand-up comedienne, which is a good way to terrify Linda; she would rather write and paint. Linda writes regularly for the local Gazette, and gives author talks to support groups for the Autism spectrum. She is a passionate advocate for Asperger’s and disability rights. A Curious & Inelegant Childhood was Linda’s first published book. She uploaded many of her warm and humorous stories to ‘The Making of Modern Australia’ website, run by the ABC, where they regularly ended up in the Highest Rated section. I’m not broken, I’m just different is Linda’s second book. She has written and illustrated a companion book for children, which also deals with Asperger’s, Callan the Chameleon. Linda is currently working on her next novella; based on her nursing training and experience.
