Synopsis
douard Manet is one of the worlds best-known artists, but he almost wasnt an artist at all. His father tried to persuade him practice law or join the navy, but Manet wanted to paint. His depictions of modern life, such as caf scenes, people going to the opera, and watching horse races, bridged the gap between realism and Impressionism. Readers follow Manets career from his early life in Paris to the height of his fame. As they read, they learn about different artistic movements and techniques and other important artists of the period. Gr 3-6-Eye-catching examinations of big names in art. Though these books are clearly laid out for reluctant readers, with short blocks of text and rich graphics, the narratives can be difficult to follow at times. A faux scrapbook format blends famous pieces of artwork, photographs, maps, and sidebars about related people and topics over a pastel-colored background. Reproductions of paintings are seamlessly paired with descriptions of the artist's life or aesthetic concerns. Research tools are limited, however.
