Synopsis

Kate was a firm believer in the first draft always being the right one and she rarely revised any of her works. The Awakening was a hugely controversial piece and Kate was denied admission into the Fine Art Club in St. Louis after its publication. This rejection hurt her deeply and she stopped writing as profusely after this time. Kate Chopin died abruptly in 1904 due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Like many authors, her work was not fully appreciated during her lifetime, although she is a well-loved author today. Her most famous work The Awakening, is a novel that was set in New Orleans and Southern Louisiana. The setting takes place during the end of the 19th century and centers around the main character Edna Pontellier. The novel discusses Edna's struggle to reconcile her two differing views on feminism and motherhood with the social attitudes in the South. Critics view this novel as one of the earliest works of feminist literature. It is also seen as a precursor to American modernism. Chopin blends a realistic narrative, social commentary, and psychological complexity that reminds the reader of authors such as Faulkner and Hemingway. The novel falls into the category of naturalism. Chopin had a great love for French writer Guy de Maupassant and the tone of The Awakening reflects this affection. The focus on human behavior and the complexity of the social structures of the time are themes that Maupassant also explored in his short stories. However, what makes The Awakening a remarkable piece is the humor that Chopin weaves throughout the stories. The skewering of the upper class is an integral part of the story that both shocks and delights the reader. In many literary reviews, critics of her work have linked The Awakening to the plays of Tennessee Williams. The two southern authors have similar characteristics and themes in their work certainly. After its release, The Awakening was censored, but it was never directly banned. The novel was considering shocking for its depictions of feminine sexual desire as well as the protagonist who raged against the social norms and gender roles of the time. The Awakening received a similar reception to Ibsen's The Doll House, and both pieces have similar themes. The two main newspapers in St. Louis had widely differing views of the novel. One called the novel poison and said that it was dangerous and immoral while the other praised Chopin's bold portrayal. The novel is still influential and it has been used in many different methods today. The Grand Isle, a 1991 film, was a dramatization of the film starring Kelly McGillis as the main character. The novel has also been the basis of many plays, literary references, and has even been used in feminist dances and performances.
