Robert A. Stiles was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, on July 27, 1836. He was the son of the Rev. Joseph C. Stiles, who later moved his family to Connecticut. Robert was an 1859 Yale College graduate. Not long after his graduation, he went to Richmond, Virginia, and became captivated with the South. Although he was a Unionist when the War Between the States broke out, Stiles felt constrained by his conscience to fight for the Confederacy. After the war, he remained in Virginia, where he practiced law in Richmond. He was a popular speaker at Confederate Veteran events. He was buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, along with many of his fellow Confederate veterans. Robert Stiles’ recollections were written long after the war, but his book is still alluring and charismatic as it illustrates his career in the Confederate army and answers the question of why the majority of Southerners believed so strongly in their “Cause.”
