Fuera de cultivar los géneros fantásticos y las historias de misterio, Poe fue también un consagrado poeta, en cuyos escritos se aprecia sin dificultad la misma maestría de su narrativa. “Razones al margen de mi voluntad me han impedido en todo momento esforzarme seriamente por algo que, en circunstancias más felices, hubiera sido mi terreno predilecto” escribió en un prólogo a sus poemas, refiriéndose a su relación con la poesía, labor a la que tuvo que anteponer su obra periodística, espoleado por las necesidades económicas. En El cuervo, se conjugan sus grandes temas: el misterio, la muerte y lo extraño. Él mismo, explicaba que sus poemas provenían “de lo irracional, del inconsciente: la melancolía, la nocturnidad, la necrofilia, el angelismo, la pasión desapasionada, es decir, la pasión [...] del que llora invariablemente a alguna muerta”. Poe murió, como buen romántico, víctima del delirio. La presente edición de sus poemas, se encuentra prologada y anotada por el poeta nicaragüense Rubén Darío.
