As soon as the door to OR Room 6 closed, Connor turned to Cassie. "Follow me." 
He opened a narrow door nearby and led Cassie up some steps into a small observation room. Connor sat on one of the small yellow plastic chairs lined up along the window. Cassie sat next to him, and they both stared into the OR.
"I've never lost a patient ... before today," Connor said.
Cassie's mouth dropped open with surprise. "Really? I thought that people die all the time in the ER."
"Not at Westley Hospital," he said. "Have you ever lost a patient?"
"Two. The mother's uterus ruptured. Both she and the baby died." She swallowed hard and then continued, her voice weak, "When your patients die, I think little pieces of you die too."
"What happens when you run out of pieces?" Connor asked.
"I don't know."
