From the Author:
Why did you write the book?
Discovering Secular Humanism is my attempt to answer the question, "What is secular humanism?" I grew up hearing how evil secular humanism was. How secular humanism was leading the United States to hell. Everything I heard about secular humanism was bad, but no one, no one, could explain what it was.
And as it turns out, secular humanism is a good thing, not bad at all. Not only that, it is the great hope of our age. It is secular humanism that will lead our world to salvation.
What is secular humanism?
Secular humanism is a belief that humans can be great, can achieve great things, and be moral and ethical, all without the help of gods or supernatural powers.
Is secular humanism just another religion?
Secular humanism is a position, not a religion. What that means is that secular humanism is a way of describing a type of philosophy. Any belief system that believes human beings can do great things, solve their problems, be ethical and moral, while not waiting for help from or believing in a god or supernatural force is a secular humanist philosophy. A secular humanist philosophy can be liberal or conservative.
The answer to this question also depends on your definition of a religion. The old fashion definition is that a religion has a core belief in some type of god or something supernatural. Secular humanism accepts neither. There is no god in secular humanism and everything is natural.
What is the connection between secular humanism and evolution?
There is no real connection between the two. They are two very distinct belief systems. However, evolution is based on scientific reason and solid scientific evidence, which secular humanism promotes. There are those who do not believe in science who wish to suppress the theory of evolution. It is because this theory is good science, based on sound reason that secular humanist have taken up its cause.
What do secular humanists do?
Mostly the same stuff other people do. Go out, try to have a good time, walk, jog, go shopping, read, watch movies, think about stuff, all without the help of any supernatural force.
How can I know if I am a secular humanist?
If you do not believe in anything beyond the natural world, and if you believe that humans can do good things, then you are a secular humanist.
How would the world change if everyone were a secular humanist?
A secular humanist world would be focused on the betterment of society and people. A secular humanist world would be focused on solutions that would produce real results now and in the future.
Why does it matter to me?
We waste so much time on stuff that does not matter and does not help. So much effort is spent perpetuating belief systems simply because those systems are familiar, not because they work well. Secular humanism would be much more focused on results that produced solutions that work.
