Gr 3-6-Treating the Great Lakes as a region that encompasses parts of the United States and Canada, these books provide introductory information in an attractive format. Two-to-four page chapters discuss geographical aspects of each subject, including geology, industry, regions, waterways, and historic and current populations, and explain how they affect or are characteristic of the region. Sidebars add information about related topics. Large illustrations, including photos, satellite images, and maps, add visual interest, and most are well chosen, although a few photos don't align with the text boxes, such as information about the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck superimposed on a full-page photo of a generic shipwreck in Lake Huron. Despite that minor weakness, this set is a good choice for emerging readers.α(c) Copyright 2014. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
