K-Gr 2—These introductions to units of measure combine full-page color photos and an explanatory narrative written in simple, large-font, declarative sentences to assist young readers in their measuring adventures. Each title presents one or two problems involving converting units, calculating an average, or, in the case of Volume, determining the volume of a small solid item using water displacement in a graduated cylinder. Disappointingly, the answers are given immediately. On the other hand, each volume closes with an intriguing extension of its topic: Distance, for example, shows how to use a dollar bill or a quarter when no ruler is handy; Speed closes with an introduction to knots and nautical miles; and Weight looks to the past when an arbitrarily chosen stone was used as a "weird way to measure weight" by some localities. VERDICT An excellent alternative to Cherry Lake's "Measuring Mania," aimed at a younger audience than Gareth Stevens's "Measure Up Math."
