There has been rapid progress in using large computers to solve problems possessing wide ranges of time scales. The variety of applications is bewildering, among them multiple-time-scale problems in chemical kinetics, statistical mechanics, weather prediction, astrophysics, radiation hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, and particle simulation of plasmas. Here, a number of the more successful numerical methods in each application are described. In collecting theses methods, we hope to present the reader not only with a cookbook of recipes for modeling particular multiple-time-scale problems, but also with examples of inventiveness and focus that should lead to success in other, similar problems as well.
