The beloved bestseller, updated for the classrooms of today

This updated edition of Ron Nash’s The Active Classroom shows how to protect students from the higher-than-ever risk of becoming passive observers rather than active participants in the classroom. Featuring a wealth of new content plus an insightful foreword by Rich Allen, it shows:

  • Ways to highlight writing as an essential discipline students need to excel within the Common Core Standards and beyond.
  • Techniques for boosting engagement with visuals and technology, especially in modern hybrid classrooms.
  • How the first two weeks of school set the tone for the entire year.

Review:

"Filled with a number of great examples, reader-friendly explanations and guidance, and valuable strategies. The author shares the key ingredients for creating active, interactive classrooms and powerful, engaging presentations."--Sandra Rief, Educational Consultant

"Any teacher or presenter in a group setting would find the clearly organized information immediately useful. I am anxious to try some of these ideas in my own classroom, and I believe that teachers would respond very positively to professional development on the topic of presentation skills."--Karen L. Fernandez, Humanities Facilitator

"Teachers will find what they need to know all in one place. I teach middle school and have taught adults as well, and I found wonderful tidbits of information that I could immediately put into practice in both situations, which is rare."--Patti Hendricks, Teacher

"Provides a plethora of valuable strategies, activities, and presentation techniques that will enhance teaching and learning. If teachers really desire classroom improvement, they will want to read this book!"--Sara E. Spruce, Professor of Education

"Incorporates relevant ideas with simple solutions. The ideas are easy to implement, simply requiring an awareness of what one is doing to shift to a more interactive environment."--Rick Froehbrodt, Elementary School Teacher

"Picture confident learners in joyful classrooms, and you'll have a sense of what this book offers. Based on a sound foundation of current research, Nash illuminates a rich variety of methods for energizing learners and learning. His approach to creating student-centered classrooms is practical and accessible for both new and experienced teachers."--Laura Lipton and Bruce Wellman, Codirectors

"Nash's passion for teaching is on every page. This is a handbook for both beginning and veteran teachers who want to invigorate their teaching, motivate their students, and have fun along the way."--Kay Burke, Educational Consultant

"An accessible, inclusive, short, and to-the-point rendering of recent research and practice that promotes the sort of classroom that I appreciate. This book is a reader-friendly compilation of teaching strategies that are brain-based and that promote active learning, interactive learning environments, and the inclusion of all learning modalities."--Jim Hughes, New Teacher Support Specialist

"In this second edition of his Corwin bestseller, Nash expands on the types of communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills students will need to compete in the global economy. A renewed emphasis on writing, reading, and oral communication reflect the utility and promise of the Common Core Standards, and Nash includes chapters on the importance of student writing and teacher clarity when it comes to classroom communication. Nash makes the case for a balance between the new technological realities of the twenty-first century and the kind of face-to-face student interactions that will help students transition from school to work, meet the requirements of an ever-changing workplace, and become thoughtful and involved citizens. Veteran and beginning teachers will benefit from these practical ideas for achieving classroom success, as well as gain a sense of satisfaction from a job well done - and kids well served."--Kay Burke, Author/Consultant (06/06/2013)

" ll of my teachers in two different schools have worked with Ron - and what a difference it has made. Our students move frequently, do the majority of the talking in the classroom, ask deep questions, clarify their understanding - and have fun! My teachers are building on the active classroom principles - and keep asking when they can work with Ron again. This stuff works!"--Judy Lewis, Principal (06/07/2013)
