About the Author

Karen M. Allen, PhD, LCSW, received her bachelor’s degree in social psychology from Oakland University, her MSW in social work administration, and her PhD in education from Wayne State University. She has nearly 20 years of experience in health care as a medical social worker, department director, and administrator. Her clinical practice involved working with individuals and families affected with severe illnesses and traumas, including burns, spinal cord injuries, head injuries, cancer, and strokes. Most recently her clinical work and research has been in trauma-infused cognitive behavioral therapy especially as it relates to women who are recovering from interpersonal violence. Dr. Allen is a co-author with Danielle Wozniak of Surviving Domestic Violence and has written over 30 publications including peer-reviewed papers, books, book chapters, and other publications. She is currently professor and director of the social work program at Indiana University Bloomington. She serves on the editorial review boards for Social Work in Health Care, Social Work in Mental Health, and Advances in Social Work, is a licensed clinical and macro-practice social worker, and teaches practice, policy, and research.

William J. Spitzer, PhD, DCSW, earned his doctorate in social work and business administration from the University of Illinois. His 30 year career appointments include Virginia state manager of licensing operations and department director of social work services for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) hospitals/clinics, Oregon Health & Science University hospitals/clinics, and Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System. He serves as the National Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care publications editor, was society president in two states, and on the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) board of directors. Dr. Spitzer received the national Hy Weiner Social Work Leadership Award, Virginia and Oregon leadership awards, and had his department honored as Best Health System Patient Care Department by VCU hospitals.  Dr. Spitzer was clinical associate professor at VCU, with prior appointments at Portland State University and the University of Illinois. He has 40 publications, served on multiple Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation teams and journal editorial boards, and edits the expanding eleven-volume Exemplars in Health Care Social Work Practice texts.

Review

Charting the territory of health care in American society is a daunting task. This text takes on the challenge in a bold and ambitious style that is robust in historical accuracy and insightful when articulating the responsibility of professional social work in today’s complex evolving health care environment. A particular hallmark of this text is the thread that is weaved from the origins of American health care to its current texture. Author: Frank R. Baskind, Dean Emeritus and Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work, Past President of the Council on Social Work Education

More than an academic text, this important work clearly and accurately characterizes the skills, challenges, and patient and family-centered work of the present day healthcare social worker. Amidst the turmoil and theoretical debate driven by health care reform, the authors write from direct experience effectively bringing their knowledge into a comprehensive examination of the value and role of social workers in the health care arena today. Author: Edward Woomer, Associate Administrator, Nemours duPont Hospital for Children, Past President of the National Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care

"Drs. Allen and Spitzer provide a very thorough and insightful examination of not only the profession of social work, but also the complex context in which social workers must work. The treatment of the history of attention to social determinants of health, the evolution of the healthcare delivery system, and the renewed attention to social determinants through the Affordable Care Act is of interest and importance not only to members of the profession, but to all healthcare professionals and others who wish to understand this rapidly changing industry." Author: Carolyn (Cindy) A. Watts, Richard M. Bracken Chair and Chairman, Department of Health Administration, School of Allied Health Professionals, Virginia Commonwealth University

This comprehensive volume makes an important new contribution to the literature of health care social work. In exploring social work’s changing roles in health care, it offers knowledge that is based both on thorough research and on practice wisdom drawn from experiences of the editors and authors. Author: Kay Davidson, Past Dean and Professor, University of Connecticut School of Social Work

Drs. Allen and Spitzer provide a comprehensive and well-sourced review of the practice of social work within the broader context of past and present health care delivery models. Most intriguing is their projection of the future of social work in health care using patient-centered, integrated care, medical homes, navigators, and patient/provider partnerships. Author: Michael Jurgensen, Senior Vice President, Health Policy & Planning, Medical Society of Virginia

Condition: Acceptable. LIGHTNING FAST SHIPPING! A heavily used, but still working copy. Coffee stain and wrinkling to the edge of the pages when a tired undergrad fell asleep and knocked their cup over on their books. The binding and pages of the book have been reinforced with tape, has tape and stickers on the cover, as well as lots of notes (some of the answers in the learning activities may be filled in) on the pages. Definitely not pretty, but it's a working copy at a great price that ships fast. ~ Book does NOT contain an access code or CD/DVD. Print on demand copy. Seller Inventory # #9B-00080
