The Chateau Villa, a gorgeous mansion, is the largest dwelling of its kind for miles around. It is owned by a wealthy man, Pierre, and his family. For generations, the family has prospered economically because of their ability to successful plant, and yield, unusually large amounts of rice, but will all that change? Apart from his family, Pierre's only other interest is horse racing. Will his addiction to money- and horseracing-lead to his demise, or will a far worse fate befall him and his family? Everyone knows that Pierre is wealthy and respected, but is he really the man everyone thinks he is? Everything changes when a much less wealthy, new out-of-state railroad family takes possession of a white washed, comparatively modest mansion, about a mile away from the edge of Chateau Villa. The new family is quiet and, at fi rst, no trouble at all. Then, Pierre's world begins to change in ways he doesn't like. A rugged young man named Ben Chesser lives in the smaller mansion with his religiously grounded family. He is also interested in horse races, but he is simple minded and practical. He isn't seeking wealth, but true and genuine love. Will he fi nd it? Political ties, historical family values and loyalty are all challenged once Ben and Gabrielle get acquainted. It seems they have risen out of the challenges-and opportunities-of two different worlds . . . but are their world's really all that different? Can they co-exist? Will they be forced to? How can two families so vastly different accept a relationship like theirs? Can there be a compromise, or are values too steeped to be changed? What can the young couple get from each other to insure future stability? Can the much different families survive in the occupation of an invading Union Army . . . together? Will war tear them apart?
