I would enjoy taking on Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination for President, but it would require strong national resolve to end war, de-criminalize poverty and take a tough stand on fossil fuel emissions. My gender and ethnicity are only relevant if I can use the positive elements of my background and experience to rise above being irritatingly female and falling into the use and abuse of a disconcertingly foreign culture. Fortune has favored me with a bit of charm, intelligence and common sense. The rest seems to be mostly in the hands of those proud Americans with the gall to say, "Ya Basta".
About the Author:
CARMELA CHÁVEZ is a thinker and a writer who has been working as a caregiver for a quadriplegic woman after leaving the practice of law. She graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1974, where she was a student senator and activist who spoke out to advance a range of liberal causes. She earned a law degree from Harvard, and for 15 years, she owned a law office, taking cases as a public defender, a social security disability representative and a childrens' advocate. She lives in the Nob Hill Neighborhood in Albuquerque.
