Synopsis

Please note that the paperback with the turquoise edition is an old version of this novel. 'It has been a joy to engage with such a thoughtful and thought provoking book of such intelligence and emotional range . . . Haneen enthralled, delighted and engaged me on multiple levels.' The Literary Consultancy.

Set against the turmoil of twentieth century Iraq, Haneen is the tale of Kamaran, his cousin Leyla and the city they love - Baghdad. Inseparable as children, the cousins are parted when the rivalry between their fathers ends in tragedy. Years later, in exile from the regime, Kamaran hears news of Leyla and risks everything to return home and find her, unaware that his country is about to be pitched into an unwinnable war with the West.

After two decades of conflict and a thousand and one memoirs by Allied veterans of ‘The Iraq War’, Haneen beckons you to look beyond the restricted vision of a gun sight and explore a different Iraq, a beloved Iraq - an Iraq which can only exist, now, in our imaginations.
