9781484013427: Inventory Management Handbook: The comprehensive guide to practical inventory management

Synopsis

The Inventory Management Handbook (IMH) has been developed over many years to bridge the gap between theory and practice. It provides a comprehensive reference for inventory management practitioners and students. It covers the range of independent demand systems as well as Material Requirements Planning (MRP) in manufacturing and maintenance. Case studies for the implementation of alternate systems such as Just in Time (JIT), consignment stock and vendor managed inventory are included to show how they are implemented. The IMH also covers a wide range of inventory related topics such as forecasting, stocktaking, cataloguing and spares criticality assessment (SCAS).The IMH is based on the Inventory Management course notes developed for Central Queensland University distance education and enhanced over the ten years the course was conducted. It is therefore easily followed with worked examples of the many algorithms encountered in inventory management. The IMH has been further expanded to include relevant case studies of companies such as Aristocrat Technologies, BHP, Comalco, ICI, Mincom and Kenworth, the most up-to-date inventory management developments as well as a glossary and Normal Distribution table.

About the Author

The need for a comprehensive Inventory Management Handbook (IMH) became apparent when Bill searched for a complete reference book for Inventory Management to use for the Central Queensland University distance education course. He needed a book which covered and explained the many inventory systems as well as inventory related topics in a way easily understood by those working and studying Inventory Management in both manufacturing and maintenance operations. Many books cover different Inventory Management systems such as independent demand systems, Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Just in Time (JIT). Other books cover in depth topics such as Forecasting and Statistical Sampling. The Inventory Management Handbook explains these in the easily understood way essential for distance education students studying independently. Very few books cover inventory related topics such as Cataloguing, Marginal Analysis, Surplus Stock, Consignment Stock, Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), Spares Criticality Assessment (SCAS), Stocktaking, Inventory Optimization, and strategic developments in Inventory Management. Finding the required information quickly and easily is an essential attribute of a practical “Handbook”. Each chapter is complete, obviating the need to refer to preceding chapters for formulae or explanations. An Index makes finding topics and sub-topics covered in different chapters quick and easy. The Glossary provides a quick reference for the many terms and abbreviations encountered in “Inventory Speak”. The IMH provides an insight into the many invisible aspects of computerised systems which will be of invaluable assistance to Inventory Managers when specifying the features they require. The IMH aims to both increase knowledge of Inventory Management and direct readers to sources of additional information. The IMH is based on Bill,s fundamental philosophy There are three levels of knowledge. “You know a fact because you have been informed of it from an authoritative source. You can do something because you have been shown how. You understand because you have thought about it till you could explain it.”
