Synopsis

Use this practical, step-by-step guide on lean agile strategy to harness technological disruption at your large business to successfully advance your business rather than suffer a loss of business. The lean agile enterprise concept is demystified and translated into action as the author shares his experience with both success and major failure in areas such as healthcare, insurance, major airline, manufacturing, financial services, education, and big data.
The author shares the good, the bad, and the ugly of enterprise-level adoption of lean startup practices (what we call a “lean corporation”). The book provides step-by-step instructions specifically targeted to technologists in multiple roles―from CEO to a developer on the ground―on how to build a “lean agile corporation” and avoid common traps. Building on the experience of the “lean startup” framework of Steven Blank and Eric Reis, this book takes these concepts to the enterprise level by providing tips and best practice guidelines, sharing “horror stories” and common anti-patterns in a fun and engaging way.

Review

Software has eaten the world, and nowthe pace of technological change is eatingcompanies that try to operate without a lean mindset.   Largeenterprises must transform to compete andthrive in the modern digital economy.  This requires operating with a leanmindset from top to bottom and side to sideto keep up with the rapidly accelerating pace of change.  A transformationof this magnitude is daunting for even the world's most admired companiesbecause the required shift in mindset, culture, and practice impacts the entireorganization.  So how do you go from business as usual to atechnology-enabled disruptor that can rapidly adapt and respond?

There are manytools, frameworks, books, and methods dealing with using lean to innovate likea startup, so how do you get started?  Michael's book is the place tostart your journey.  He brings together the best of Lean Startup, ScaledAgile, Lean UX, Design Thinking, and DevOps, distilling the most importantprinciples into 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year guides; the guides will help youfocus on customers from the onset, communicate your vision, synthesize anoperating model, measure what truly matters, and take steps to pivot whilepreserving what works.

Michaelexplains the keys to success: falling in love with the problem not thesolution, fostering an environment of agility, and rapidly learning via leanexperiments that drivetransformation to build a corporate machinethat innovates like a startup.  Michael's use of lean analogies and antipatterns, combined with hisin-depth knowledge and experience in the field of transformation, make his booka great read for every executive, software leader, and transformation expertresponsible for leading change in large corporation.
