Synopsis

Rhinoceros has a magnificent horn, which all the animals admire. All, that is, except Hippo. Hippo is jealous of Rhino’s horn, and desperately wants one of her own. While Rhino is asleep, Hippo steals her horn and sets it on her snout. But Hippo quickly discovers that wearing a large and heavy horn brings more problems than rewards. Soon all the other animals are telling her that a rhino horn belongs on a rhinoceros. Hippo starts to doubt her decision, and when she comes face to face with the compassionate Rhino, Hippo understands there is no room in the world for jealousy.

About the Author

Avril van der Merwe is the author of How Cheetah Got His Tears (Puffin Books 2017) as well as several prize-winning children’s stories set in Africa. She developed a love of illustrated children’s fiction during a decade as a pre-primary school teacher in Cape Town. She also taught English at Rand Park High in Johannesburg. Although Avril grew up in South Africa, she now lives in Seattle in the USA. Apart from children’s stories, she writes adult fiction and works as an inspirational writer and speaker.

Heidi-Kate Greeff is a Cape Town-based illustrator with a degree in Fine Art from the University of Pretoria, and a love for creating animal characters that capture our hearts.
