About the Author

Gary's law enforcement career was shaped by danger, sacrifice, and pressure only understood by those who have lived it. As a Narcotics Detective with the DEA, he survived a near fatal ambush during an enforcement operation. A deadly force encounter, he was then thrown from the suspect's vehicle at forty five miles per hour, narrowly avoiding a tractor trailer. Through his actions, he earned the Legion of Honor and the Combat Cross, two of the profession's most distinguished awards. His recovery required eleven major surgeries. Years later, during a wingsuit skydive, he broke his neck a mile above the ground, instantly losing all movement from the neck down. Through discipline and calm under pressure, he managed to steer his canopy using only body weight and survived a forty mile per hour crash landing. His recovery defied every expectation, and he ultimately returned to skydiving. Gary served at every level of police work: county corrections, county patrol, motorcycle patrol corporal, and county detective corporal. He worked as a Gang and Narcotics Task Force detective, a DEA Task Force Officer, and a member of the Sheriff's Emergency Response Team (SERT). He was also a Police Diver, a certified commercial diver, and a United States Marine. After retiring from law enforcement, he continued to serve with the FBI in a support role, also serving as a senior training advisor responsible for all police recruits at the police academy.
