"Don't Be Give UP," is the story of a young girl growing up in a Colorado coal mining town during World War II. Seen through the eyes of Shirley Skufca, history and narrative merge to explore the war on the Home Front. At first the war is exciting for Shirley and her sisters as they play spies, war games, and "can" dirty for winter mud pies. But the war becomes more serious when Shirley's uncles leave to go into the army. As the war drags on, everything in Shirley's daily life is affected by the war, the rationing of food, gas, clothing and shoes. Told with humor and pathos, this book is an important reminder of the sacrifices made on all fronts to win the war.

About the Author:

When I was a child I could hardly wait to go to school because then I'd learn how to read and I'd know everything! That was the beginning of my life-long interest in words and writing.

My love of language led me to a career in teaching English and leadership positions in education at the state, regional, and local levels.

For the past thirty years I flirted with the idea of writing a memoir about growing up during World War II in Crested Butte, Colorado, a coal mining town. At last my dream came true and I wrote and published my book.

I belong to two writer's groups, founded the Porterville Writer's Workshop, which has flourished for over thirty years, and published my poetry. I received four awards for nonfiction, one of them for the first chapter and synopsis of "Don't Be Give Up," and another for one of its chapters, "Billy Boy."

I hope readers will enjoy my book as much as I enjoyed writing it.
