From the Inside Flap:
Historical Note: Mound Island
In the heart of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta lies a mysterious island called Mound Island. It is located 24 miles north of downtown Mobile, Alabama.
Mound Island on Bottle Creek is interesting because of the ancient group of Indians who lived there from about 1200 to 1450 AD. Archeological digs suggest that they had migrated there from the mound building tribe at Moundville, Alabama, near Tuscaloosa. They are the ancestors of the modern tribes known as the Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws and others.
There are 18 earthen mounds on the island with the tallest being about 45 feet high. Five of the mounds are arranged around a central plaza. It is believed that the ruling families lived on the highest mounds and the lower classes lived on the lessor mounds. Excavations show that the mounds were well planned and probably took years to construct, one basket of dirt at a time.
