Compared to traditional teaching methods, Dialogue Exchange dramatically increases classroom speaking practice. Dialogue Exchange uses an interactive, fun, student-centred format to teach listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary to beginners. There are fifteen dialogues and dozens of activities for presenting, practicing, reviewing, and extending each one, plus correction activities--over 600 activities to chose from including pair dictations, jigsaws, dictation relays, LEAs, mingles, discussions, and a wide variety of well-designed games. Each chapter contains a nine-panel comic strip that illustrates the dialogue, plus several worksheets. Most activities have the students speaking in pairs or small groups. Activities begin with controlled practice and progress gradually toward free practice. The content is everyday, survival English, and the goal is communicative competence.Dialogue Exchange contains both instructions for teachers and student worksheets. Worksheets can be photocopied for classroom use. The materials are designed for adults or older teenagers and are suitable for beginners from all backgrounds. Some activities can be used for tutoring or for language exchanges. Step-by-step instructions, logical teaching progressions, classroom management strategies, fun activities, and low preparation make life easier for the teacher.

I think Dialogue Exchange Interactive English Listening and Speaking for Beginners is excellent. I have now read it from beginning to end and I’m very impressed. I really appreciate your extensive activities for presenting, practicing, reviewing, and extending the fifteen target dialogues. I also really like the step-by-step instructions and the dialogue focus on survival skills as well as the visuals which support each of the dialogues. It really is an excellent resource for teaching the beginning English language levels. I am currently teaching a TESOL course focusing on Teaching Listening and Speaking Skills. I have a reference list and I plan to add and recommend your book to my students. I think it would be really useful for new teachers.

Once in a long while, someone comes out with a gem of a book which busy teachers can snap up, understand clearly, and use immediately. Bradbury's Dialogue Exchange is one of these special books. I have always found the best way of reviewing a teacher's book is to try it out in a real classroom situation. So, having done this myself, I am quite happy to report that Diane Bradbury's book passed the test--it was a very effective lesson which involved and engaged every student in the class. And, through the use of Bradbury's book it was prepared in fifteen minutes. Not only is this book easy and quick to use, the book is pedagogically sound. It promotes cooperative, interactive learning with vocabulary expansion and oral practice. Since every lesson begins with an illustrated scenario, learners are intrigued and engaged--they begin to postulate about possible conversation content. Students immediately grasp the subject matter from the pictures and struggle to find words to express the meaning in the pictures and therefore strongly motivated to accept new vocabulary as it is presented. In conclusion, I feel that Dialogue Exchange would be a very useful asset to the library of any teacher of ESL Beginner Adults. ..............
