“Dr. Robert Shepard’s book, Fulfilling My Destiny, Step by Step, speaks with clarity to parents and adults. It is a confirmation of some educators’ belief that all basic learning takes place before the sixth year and all later learning is but an elaboration of the earlier. Dr. Eric H. Erikson’s Growth and Crises of the Healthy Personality believes that a child acquires a sense of basic trust and basic mistrust by the time s/he is twelve to fifteen months old; the experience of basic trust or basic mistrust in the early years is a foundation for the capacity for faith in God. From the beginning of life to the end we must walk by trust or faith, which at first may be in man but ultimately must be transferred to God. Dr. Shepard’s book speaks to our need today to speak through the language of relationships as well as through words. We need the grace to be in order to help others to become. This book also speaks to youth. Everyone is born with a spiritual gift, or purpose; call it what you may. It is incumbent upon everyone to discover his or her gift, to cultivate it, and to make the best use of it. To this end may this book be dedicated.” ―The late Rev. Dr. Nilous M. Avery, Sr., Former Pastor, Hill Street Baptist Church, Asheville, NC

Robert Louis Shepard was the first Black Ph.D. scientist in the organization where he started his research career. The book details his life, the influences - personally and professionally - that molded him into a successful scientist, scholar, entrepreneur, and role model for hundreds of individuals in the United States and others abroad. Shepard provides a look at the historical context for his life experiences growing up in a small town in North Carolina during the Jim Crow era, and how these experiences interfaced with the history of African Americans in America to shape the man he became. Shepard reflects on his amazing life in "Fulfilling My Destiny, Step By Step," crediting the people that helped him on his journey, starting with his parents and community. While the book provides a look at how Shepard parlayed his own life lessons into a successful business in the science and engineering fields, it has a broader purpose of laying down a blueprint for future generations across the broad spectrum of social, economic, historical and political arenas in the United States. Most especially, Shepard wrote this book for his children, grandchildren and his future descendants, providing a glimpse of how he stood on a foundation of faith and courage, belief in the best of the human spirit, and care and love for all that entered his world looking for nothing in return, to create a life of immeasurable fulfillment for himself, his family and for countless others in the United States and others abroad. "Fulfilling My Destiny, Step By Step," is the story of how Shepard discovered his purpose then nurtured it to become a contributor to the global community. The book is certain to inspire whoever reads Shepard's story--no matter their race or position in life.
