Synopsis

This is the story of Toby, a fifteen-year-old boy living in the early part of the twelfth century during the reign of King Stephen, a period in the history of England, when barons, lords, and bishops owned their own knights and soldiers, and fought among each other to gain land and power. This is the story of Toby, a poacher, making a living selling rabbits and pheasant to villagers as he roamed the length of Nottinghamshire. One day he came across a wounded knight and his daughter escaping the clutches of the powerful and brutal Baron Osbert. Toby helped by hiding them, disguising and feeding them, laying false trails for the pursuing soldiers—he also fell in love with Rebecca Anne, the knight’s daughter. This is the story of how Toby became a knight, won his spurs, and came to the aid of King Stephen. The help he gave to the wounded knight changed not only his life, but the future of England.

About the Author

My thanks to Kathryn Smith for proof reading my story, and to my long suffering wife Carol, without whose help and encouragement I would never have had this book published. And not forgetting the girls at the Dovecote Café, for keeping me supplied with mugs of tea
