A euphemism is a generally harmless word, name, or phrase that substitutes an offensive or suggestive one. Some euphemisms intend to amuse, while others intend to give positive appearances to negative events or even mislead entirely. Here is an example of a euphemism: “When someone has broken wind, enquire as to who has cut the cheese.” Euphemism is the language of evasion, of hypocrisy, of deceit, and of prudery. Euphemisms also often take the place of profanity. The subjects about which we tend to use euphemisms change along with our social attitudes, although euphemisms associated with sexual behavior and defecation have shown remarkable staying powers. In the last twenty five years, there has been a shift in our attitude to such matters as female employment, sexual variety, marriage, illegitimacy, illegal drugs, abortion, job security, and sexual pursuit. In speech and writing, we use euphemism when dealing with taboo or sensitive subjects. This book uses crossword puzzles to bring you some of the more popular euphemisms. Each crossword puzzle has a number of euphemisms embedded in it. The clues for them are bracketed and in bold so that they are clearly differentiated from the standard words. We also provide a typical phrase for each euphemism as an additional clue.
