Virgil is Ancient Rome's most famous poet, and arguably his greatest, thanks to his epic poem The Aeneid. Modeled after Homer's The Iliad and the Odyssey, Virgil's poem told the story of Aeneas's escape from Troy and the odyssey that brought him to Italy. In doing so, Virgil established a foundational myth for the mighty empire of Rome, while giving them a national epic with which to take pride in. Naturally, The Aeneid also influenced subsequent Roman authors, including Ovid and Lucan.
