About the Author

James Dreier is a drum set-Latin percussion specialist, educator, clinician, and performer. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) and a Master of Arts degree in music theory from the University of Iowa. Dreier has made frequent research trips to Brazil and Cuba where he studied with local master drummers and musicians. Dreier was a founding member of the Iowa based-Latin/jazz group Orquesta Alto Maiz who released eight CDs over a 26 year span. He now leads his own Latin jazz group Ritmocano, who released their CD Familia, A Latin Jazz Journey under the Realtown record label in 2014. In 2015, Dreier published his book, Latin Jazz Guide, A Path To Authentic Percussion and Ensemble Performance (Hal Leonard Corp.). As a full time Lecturer at the University of Iowa, Dreier s duties include teaching Jazz Improvisation for Drum Set, Jazz Cultures in America and Abroad, directing the Latin-jazz Ensemble and the Hawkeye Big Band. He also performs frequently with a variety of bands and ensembles, including the UI Jazz Faculty group. Dreier is an educational artist for Sabian Cymbals
