Hans Christian Andersen 1805 - 1875 From a humble childhood, the writer Hans Christian Andersen became one of the world's best loved story tellers. Here is one of his earlier stories ‘Little Ida's Flowers’ that was first published in 1835. Little Ida’s Flowers... MY poor flowers are quite dead,” said little Ida, “they were so pretty yesterday evening, and now all the leaves are hanging down quite withered. What do they do that for,” she asked, of the student who sat on the sofa; she liked him very much, he could tell the most amusing stories, and cut out the prettiest pictures; hearts, and ladies dancing, castles with doors that opened, as well as flowers; he was a delightful student. “Why do the flowers look so faded to-day?” she asked again, and pointed to her nosegay, which was quite withered...

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3-- Nostalgic illustrations and a fine translation bring one of Andersen's lesser known tales to life. The story is slight but appealing: Ida, a young girl, wonders why her small bouquet of flowers that were so pretty the day before are now withered and limp. Her friend explains that the flowers attended a ball and danced so much that they are now exhausted. That night, Ida dreams of the flowers entering her house and dancing all night. When she awakes the next morning, the flowers are gone. Remembering the flowers' advice, Ida buries her withered bouquet in the garden so that they may grow again next summer. The language is simple and direct, yet very expressive. The text is accompanied by gentle colored pencil over watercolor illustrations in muted pastel blues, pinks, and greens. Allen keeps a remarkably consistent sense of light throughout the illustrations, creating a suitably dreamlike diffusion of color. The people and flowers are executed in a fairly realistic style that eliminates unnecessary details. As charming as the overall effect is, however, this book may have difficulty finding its audience. The relatively small size of the illustrations will limit its effectiveness as a book for sharing aloud, and the fey quality of the story will limit its appeal. Like the flowers, this book may be too delicate for broad appreciation. --Denise Anton Wright, Library Book Selection Service, Inc., Bloomington, IL
