Maria C. Whalen has joined together her lifelong passion for poetry and a keen eye for the world around her, with a recent interest in natural light photography. With insight and sensitivity, her poetry explores and embraces the "observer" and "participant" found in each of us. From life experiences, which include family loss, the importance of community, and spiritual commitment, she weaves into her poetry the beauty of stillness and the value of personal growth. A native of the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York, she is a graduate of Ladycliff College, and a recipient of graduate degrees from Long Island University. As a high school special education teacher for twenty-five years, and department chairperson, she lived in the Mid-Hudson Valley region. In retirement, Ms. Whalen has returned to upstate New York to continue devoting more time to her writing and photography.
