“Annie!” Mark screamed. “The rats! The knob!” She understood. She had the remaining cabinet knob still in her hand, striking with it at the guard. Rearing back, she fired it at the glass door of the cabinet where the rats lived. The glass shattered, sprinkling to the ground. For what seemed like an eternity— nothing. Then— a wail of squeaks fell upon their ears. Within moments a wave of terrified rats began flowing from every opening of the cabinet and several other pieces of nearby furniture, the entire floor suddenly seemed awash in squealing rats. As Mark had hoped, the wave crashed over them and the guard. The surprised guard released the children and began slapping at his cloths in a vain effort to rid himself of the rats.
