After a devastating season-ending loss, America’s newest college football team, Arizona Southern Community College receives an unexpected and unprecedented bid to play in the premier Junior College Bowl Game... on national television. Assembled by their intrepid Coach in 2001 and built from funds he raised himself, they now face the nation’s perennial JUCO powerhouse, a team guaranteed the national championship if they defeat the upstarts from Tucson. The Central Texas team, a smash-mouth, knock you down and trample-over-the-body powerhouse, is a full-scholarship, nationally recruited team where every starter is a major college recruit. And they don’t just beat up their opponents; they actually knock guys out of the game. Powerful for so long, their nickname in coaching circles has been shortened to “CenTex”, a word that sounds more like a large, explosive device rather than a college football team. Despite Southern Arizona’s huge underdog position, the Coach cobbles together a plan that just might work. But first he must regroup his regionally and culturally diverse team, get them physically reconditioned and overcome a variety of obstacles... all on a shoestring budget. But with the help of a growing legion of local Tucson supporters, the coach pulls off a first-class plan that ignites practices and the mental state of his team. What was once an impossible feat now looks almost plausible. The game begins with an early, easy score by CenTex and the game appears to be the expected route. But the upstarts pull it together with toughness, team chemistry and a lot of personal heroics. The outcome remains in doubt until the final, heart-stopping drive. This story, based on real events, represents what is possible when everyone buys into a plan and egos are left at the door. CenTex should easily defeat Southern Arizona nine times out of ten, but there will only be One Game, played One Time...for everything.

JEFF SCURRAN is one of the nation’s most recognized high school football coaches. In 2005, the American Football Quarterly magazine named him “one of the nation’s top coaching prospects,” not realizing Scurran was in his fourth decade of coaching. In 2007, he was named National Coach of the Year by the NFL-SCA and selected to his community’s Sports Hall-of-Fame. He has turned failing high school football teams into playoffs champions, and the new Pima College football program into a Top Five National ranking with a huge upset in the nationally televised Pilgrim’s Bowl Classic in Texas. Coach Scurran holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida in Journalism and Communications and a Master’s Degree from the University of Arizona in Counseling and Psychology.
