Reality is deadly when you go off script.
Bliss Island seems like an idyllic place to live—especially to the people suffering on the war-torn mainland. What's not so idyllic about Bliss is the fact that the Island is a set, and everyone's life is a performance; they're all stars of a hit reality TV show, Blissful Days. Characters on the show think they're better off on Bliss than the mainland, but they're always in danger of being cut if their ratings dip too low. And no one really knows what happens to cut characters.
Nettie Starling has never had great ratings, so it seems lucky when a producer offers suggestions to help her improve. But she'll soon have to decide how far she'll go to preserve her ratings…especially when she learns what could happen to her if she doesn't.

Gr 8 Up—On Media1's Blissful Days, there is no such thing as real life, only carefully staged episodes. For this reality television program that involves an entire town, cameras are hidden everywhere and every "character" wears a microphone. The show is broadcast to all the sectors and characters are national celebrities. The characters of Blissful Days compete for ratings, always hoping to stay off the E.L. (Eligibility List) or else be cut from the show and immediately labeled a Patriot (an outcast of society). Nettie, a former E.L. herself, becomes suspicious of Media1's initiatives. She knows that digging deeper into Media1's agenda could cost her her freedom, but Nettie grows emboldened with the need for truth. This dystopian tale will resonate with teens on their own quests for authenticity and originality. With many scenes involving teens drinking and having sex to boost their ratings, this work is best suited for a high school collection. Jessica Almasy's narration is quite good, alternating voices for the many different characters. Since the characters are always on mic, they often whisper to try to hide their voices from Media1. This is problematic for listeners because very often the volume is too low to catch conversations going on sotto voce. VERDICT Recommended for collections where dystopias are still flying off the shelf.—Suzanne Dix, The Seven Hills School, Cincinnati, OH
