Synopsis

Deborah Steward has lived through every parent’s nightmare. In October 2010, she and her husband found their son Daniel dead of an apparent prescription drug overdose. Drowning in grief, unable to sleep or eat, she at first wishes only to follow Daniel out of this life. And then she hears from him. The first message comes in just days after his death, e-mailed to her by a clairaudient friend. As more messages follow, some conveyed through other friends and family members and some directly from Daniel to his parents, she begins to keep a detailed record of the signs and means of communication that her son employs to convince his family that he is still with them and that he wants to help them recover from this worst of all losses. Told by his mother, Cardinal at My Window is Daniel’s story, from his early teenage years when signs of an anxiety disorder first surfaced to his last months when his mother began to suspect that what they had thought was anxiety might be something far worse. Her fear that he might be bipolar sent her on a search for help, but it was too late. While this is Daniel’s story, it is also the story of his mother’s journey from despair to a belief that death is not the end of the journey for her or her son.

About the Author

Deborah Taylor Steward has always loved reading and writing, and this love continues to inform and nurture her life. After a childhood spent in a small Missouri town, she eventually moved to Jefferson City with her first husband and their young daughter. There, struggling with a failing marriage and a need for meaning and purpose, she enrolled in the local liberal arts university where her passions for language and learning were nurtured, particularly by English professors and one history professor. After a divorce and graduation, she found the purpose she had been seeking when she married her former history professor. Their lives were enriched with the birth of their son Daniel in 1985. In that same year, Deborah earned a master’s degree in English and was subsequently hired by her alma mater. Over the span of her career, she taught composition and various literature and humanities courses. She was also called upon by deans, vice presidents, and presidents to write and/or edit major university documents, including strategic plans and institutional self-studies. Her husband’s acumen as a financial planner and investment strategist enabled her to retire with him at the end of the fall 2007 semester at the relatively young age of 55, at the same time that their son Daniel graduated from college. She remembers their celebration of these life-changing events as one of the happiest times of her life. That happiness turned to despair in October 2010 when she and her husband found Daniel dead of a prescription drug overdose. Soon after, his first message came to them. The messages and signs continued to pour in, convincing them that their son still existed but in a different realm. They also began to get book recommendations from friends and family members, books on the afterlife, mediumship, and reincarnation. These books, and Daniel’s messages, spurred Deborah to keep a detailed record, on her computer, of her journey through grief and into a new philosophy and belief system. Eventually, she compiled her many entries into the manuscript that became Cardinal at My Window. Deborah welcomes communication from others who are struggling with grief, wondering if they are receiving signs, or coping with a family member’s psychological pain.
