Synopsis

Award-winning author Kristiana Gregory picks up where THE LEGEND OF JIMMY SPOON leaves off, in this fast-paced, robust historical adventure based on the true exploits of Elijah Nicholas Wilson. Salt Lake City, 1860: It's been several years since young Jimmy Spoon returned from living with the Shoshoni and he's restless. Working at the family store is drudgery. He longs to get out of the city, to breathe fresh air, and to sleep under the stars. One day, he sees a newspaper ad: "WANTED: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily, orphans preferred. Wages $25 a week ... " It's the chance of a lifetime. And Jimmy knows he's a perfect candidate. After years with the Indians, he can ride a horse like no other white boy. The trail boss hires him on the spot. But riding for the Express isn't easy. A rider must cover 50 miles a day through rugged terrain that exhausts three or four horses on each trip. Living conditions are primitive. There are outlaws, angry tribes, blistering heat and below-zero winters. And all along, Jimmy yearns to return to his Shoshoni family. Especially to rekindle his friendship with the lovely Nahanee. VOYA: " ... terrific ... " SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL: "Exciting ... those who have not read 'Legend' will certainly want to do so after finishing this one." BOOKLIST: "Gregory packs her chapters with enough action, drama, and humor to please even hard-core reluctant readers. A painless way to learn American history."

About the Author

Kristiana Gregory grew up in Manhattan Beach, California, two blocks from the ocean. She's always loved to make up stories, telling her younger siblings whoppers that would leave them wide-eyed. Her first rejection letter at age eleven was for a poem she wrote in class when she was supposed to be doing a math assignment. She's had a myriad of odd jobs: telephone operator, lifeguard, camp counselor, reporter, book reviewer & columnist for the LA Times. Her most recent work is her memoir, BLUE SKIES: ONE AUTHOR'S JOURNEY. Kristiana's award-winning novels include STALKED, which earned the 2012 Gold Medal for Young Adult Mystery from Literary Classics and is hailed as "historical fiction with a thrilling twist." KIRKUS calls it "an atmospheric confection that will thrill YA readers ... Gregory achieves a realistic, rich atmosphere with insightful details about the immigration process and New York tenements in the early 1900s." Now available on Kindle and in paperback. JENNY OF THE TETONS [Harcourt] won the Golden Kite Award in 1989 and was the first of two-dozen historical novels for middle grade readers. BRONTE'S BOOK CLUB [Holiday House] is set in a town by the sea and is inspired by the girls' book club Kristiana led for several years. Her most recent title with Scholastic's Dear America series is CANNONS AT DAWN, a sequel to the best-selling THE WINTER OF RED SNOW, which was made into a movie for the HBO Family Channel. From Booklist

Gr. 6-8. In Gregory's fine sequel to The Legend of Jimmy Spoon (1990), 17-year-old Jimmy is working in his father's store and pining for adventure. The two years he spent with Washakie's tribe were far more enjoyable than his life in Salt Lake City, and he longs to return to his Shoshoni family. An advertisement seeking riders for the Pony Express offers an irresistible challenge: the work seems both dangerous and heroic, and it provides an opportunity to travel through Shoshoni territory. There are some exciting adventures and new friendships for Jimmy, but there's also the discovery that carrying the mail doesn't quite live up to Jimmy's glamorous expectations. Gregory packs her short chapters with enough action, drama, and humor to please even hard-core reluctant readers, and her afterword provides additional information about real historical figures who appeared in her story. She also includes a glossary and an extensive bibliography. A painless way to learn about American history and the Pony Express. Chris Sherman
