Synopsis
The Duchesse de Langeais by Honore de Balzac is the second part of a trilogy. Part one is entitled Ferragus and The Girl with the Golden Eyes is the third part. The three stories are frequently combined under the title The Thirteen. General Armand de Montriveau, a war hero, is enamored of Duchess Antoinette de Langeais, a coquettish, married noblewoman who invites him to a ball but ultimately refuses his sexual advances and then disappears. Assisted by the powerful group known as The Thirteen, who subscribe to an occult form of freemasonry, General Montriveau finds the duchess in a Spanish monastery of Discalced Carmelites under the name of Sister Theresa.

About the Author
Balzac was the nineteenth - century French author of La Comdie Humaine, a series of almost 100 novels and plays. He was one of the founders of French literary realism and is known for the complexity of his characters: he has been called the French Dickens. A brilliant writer, he had trouble succeeding in school and in the business world. He is famous for the intense focus of his work habits - he would rise at midnight and work for fifteen hours straight, often working on several different works at a time.
