9781503900943: The Crooked Street (Frost Easton)

The hunt for a killer in San Francisco becomes a dizzying game of cat and mouse in a thrilling novel of psychological suspense.

“Lombard is your Moriarty, Frost. Taking him down will be the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done.”

San Francisco homicide detective Frost Easton hadn’t seen his estranged friend Denny in years. Not until he dies in Frost’s arms uttering a final inexplicable word: Lombard. Denny appears to be the latest victim in a string of murders linked by a distinctive clue: the painting of a spiraled snake near the crime scenes. Is it the work of a serial killer? Or is Denny’s death more twisted and personal?

To find the answer, Frost reaches into a nest of vipers—San Francisco’s shady elite—where the whispered name of Lombard is just one secret. Now, drawn into a cat-and-mouse game with an enemy who knows his every move, Frost finds there is no one he can trust. And somewhere down the crooked streets of the city, Frost’s cunning adversary is coiled and ready to strike again.

Praise for the Frost Easton Series

The Night Bird

A Goodreads Choice Award Nominee, Mystery & Thriller

“Freeman’s command of pace and plot is assured, his prose artfully layered with the sinister and serene. This one will keep you guessing, but read it with the lights on.” Publishers Weekly

“Freeman once again shows a slick knack for creating just enough tension without relying too heavily on gore—just the right amount of nastiness that will not scare away more-genteel thriller readers.” Booklist

“Freeman’s latest psychological thriller is sure to seize readers and not let go...Gripping, intense, and thoughtful, The Night Bird is a must-read.” —RT Book Reviews (Top Pick)

“...An intriguing psychological mystery introducing Detective Frost Easton investigating a case about women who appear to have been frightened to death. Boo!” Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Freeman keeps the tension high.” Pioneer Press

“Freeman’s considerable writing chops are once again on full display here in this police procedural/thriller with an inventive and twisting mystery that is a compelling read from beginning to end...You may think you have the entire mystery figured out...but you almost certainly will be wrong.” —Bookreporter

“The story line hooked me right away.” Night Owl Reviews (Top Pick)

“Freeman has a winner with The Night Bird...A real page-turner of a psychological thriller that will remain vividly in the memory bank for a long time to come.” Mystery Maven

“A genuine page-turner.” The Saturday Reader

“[The Night Bird] is definitely a psychological thriller that reads like a dark crime story, and is definitely worth checking out if you like thrillers.” Suspense Magazine

“Creepy, terrifying, and provocative...The Night Bird is a very unique mystery that combines high-tech horror with police procedure.” Gumshoe Review

The Voice Inside

“An unputdownable psychological thriller that will linger with you long after the final page is read...Brian Freeman is masterful in setting up the pace and suspense.” —Bookreporter

“Explosive...must reading for crime/mystery fans, with a smart, ethical, likable, and believable protagonist.” Pioneer Press

“While the first book in this series, The Night Bird, was outstanding, this one is even better...Explosive and totally unexpected.” Strong Reviews

“This is the way to start a book...You nearly jump from the sense of danger.” Books Are Magic

Praise for Brian Freeman

“A cleverly constructed, page-turning plot and fleshed-out primary and secondary characters make this a winner.” Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Alter Ego

“A taut, exciting story that will keep fans reading long past bedtime...The only downside to Freeman’s Jonathan Stride novels is that there are not enough of them.” ―New York Journal of Books on Alter Ego

“Freeman delivers quite a shock before this fantastic psychological thriller comes to an end.” Suspense Magazine on Marathon

“Freeman’s character and plot development remain first-rate throughout Marathon, and the continuing thread involving Stride and Serena should bring readers back for more.” ―Bookreporter on Marathon

“Freeman skillfully weaves together diverse story lines...with twists that build suspense in this fine, character-driven addition to a strong series.” Booklist (starred review) on Goodbye to the Dead

“Deftly plotted seventh Jonathan Stride novel...Stride’s heartfelt memories of [his deceased wife] and his reluctance to fully commit to [his girlfriend], coupled with an in-depth look at the book’s supporting characters, make this police procedural a standout.” Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Goodbye to the Dead

“This incredible author is perfect when giving clarity to both past and present. If there is a way to say ‘higher’ than ‘highly recommended,’ I wish I knew it. Because this is one of those thrillers that go above and beyond.” Suspense Magazine on Goodbye to the Dead

“A master of the psychological thriller...the best Stride book yet.” Duluth News Tribune on The Cold Nowhere

“Masterfully plotted...Freeman shows how those endless North Shore winters have toughened and aged Stride, closing him off from the world, but the author also convincingly makes Stride break out of his icy, self-imposed shell.” Publishers Weekly (starred review) on The Cold Nowhere

“Freeman proves once again he’s a master of psychological suspense.” —Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author on Spilled Blood

“Suspense doesn’t get more excruciating than this...Don’t miss it.” Booklist (starred review) on Spilled Blood

“Scorching suspense...In this book, [Freeman] has surpassed himself.” Star Tribune on The Bone House

“By the conclusion, you’ll wish that it was twice as long. It’s one of those books, one that is so good you hate to see it end. The Bone House is being marketed as Freeman’s first stand-alone work, but I would be the first to lobby for more Cab Bolton.” —Bookreporter on The Bone House

“Brian Freeman is, quite simply, a first-rate storyteller.” —Nelson DeMille, #1 New York Times bestselling author on Stalked

“This guy can tell a story.” —Michael Connelly, #1 New York Times bestselling author on Immoral

“Some of the most literate and stylish writing you’ll find anywhere today.” —Jeffery Deaver, #1 New York Times bestselling author on Immoral
