By the end of that fighting, the Creek were compelled to cede millions of acres of land to the expanding United States, ushering in a new era that found the Creek occupying only a small strip of Alabama by the 1830s.

About the Author

George Cary Eggleston was born in 1839. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Confederate army and later wrote his most famous work, A Rebel's Recollection, about his experiences in the effort. After the South's defeat, Eggleston moved frequently around the U.S. and worked for several newspapers, including the New York World.
